What is it like to own a golf home in Sun City MacDonald Ranch?
It is easygoing golf close to everything. Desert Willow is a short course, so a round fits into a morning, and from the higher holes in the foothills you can see a long way across the valley. Del Webb built the community's 2,513 homes from 1996 to 2001 off Horizon Ridge Parkway, its second 55+ community in the valley after Sun City Summerlin.
The big difference from most golf communities is who owns the course. Here it belongs to the residents. Elsewhere in the valley, private owners have closed courses and asked to build on them, and that question does not hang over Desert Willow the same way. It also means the owners carry the course's upkeep, so ask how golf costs show up in the dues.
The homes are compact: 18 floor plans, most on one level, plus attached villas. Every home is now more than 20 years old, so roofs, air conditioning, and finishes vary a lot from house to house, and two homes on the same fairway can be priced far apart. Off the course, life centers on the Desert Willow Clubhouse, with its fitness center, ballroom, library, billiards, craft rooms, and the Willow restaurant, plus a lap pool, bocce, and tennis outside.
The 215 is right there, The District at Green Valley Ranch is about five minutes away, and the airport is about 15. If you want a bigger community with three recreation centers, Sun City Anthem is about ten minutes south.
